Cross section

The ”cross section” (σ) of an interaction between two particles is the transverse area that measures the probability of a collision, or scattering. It is also possible to specify this value in terms of a final-state variable, such as energy or particle angle, in what is called ”differential cross section”. The sum of the differential cross section over all variables is called the ”total cross section”.
